NOTES

Spring Fishing Action on Lake Michigan: Salmon, Trout, and More in Elk Rapids

Lake Michigan - Mason, MI

Water Conditions: The water temperature in Elk Rapids is currently around 40-45°F, with water clarity improving as we move into the spring season. The currents are moderate, making for optimal fishing conditions. With the warming weather, fishing activity is starting to pick up, especially in deeper waters where fish are migrating to spawn.

Fishing Activity: Salmon and Lake Trout are the main targets in Elk Rapids, with King Salmon starting to appear as we approach late spring. The fishing action has been steady, particularly early in the morning when the fish are actively feeding. Coho Salmon are also being caught in the 30-60 ft range, particularly around drop-offs and near river mouths.

Trolling with spoons and flasher-fly combinations has been the most effective method, with anglers reporting good success around 40-50 ft of water. Lake Trout have been abundant, especially near the deeper sections of the bay. Try using spin-glo lures or J-Plugs for Lake Trout, and be prepared to fish deeper, around 80-120 ft, as the fish move to cooler depths.

Inshore fishing for Smallmouth Bass has also been productive, with some great action near the rocky shores and sandbars. Walleye are starting to bite as well, especially around dusk and dawn in the shallower areas of Elk Rapids. Expect more consistent bites as the water warms up through May.

Tips for Anglers:

For the best results, target the deeper waters in the early morning hours before the sun fully rises.

Be sure to check the local regulations, as fishing for certain species may be subject to seasonal restrictions.

Stay patient, as the bite can slow midday when the water warms up. Returning to the deeper, cooler waters late in the day will increase your chances.
